Long Telegram
After years of exposure to the system of the Soviet Union and years of culminating dislike and opposition of the country, I finally found courage and enough antipathy in February 1946 to write a telegram, rather LONG telegram since it was, after all, 8000 words long. I felt that while some others believed the Soviet Union was truly working for world peace, what was more important to it was security and power. In my views, the Soviet Union selfishly lived to spread Communism since the country believed socialism and democracy would disintegrate communism. I opposed the propaganda that the Soviet Union presented to their poor repressed citizens, showing only the good (sometimes faking the good) side of Communism. Not only was the Soviet Union cruel to its own citizens, but also foreign countries. I wrote in the telegram, “In foreign countries Communists will, as a rule, work toward destruction of all forms of personal independence, economic, political or moral.” Of course, I did not simply point out the faults of Communism and the Soviet Union for that would be useless, but I proposed new ideas that would solve this terrible issue. Containment was a big solution (of course, since I created it), preventing the spread of communism. Already it made my stomach turn to think that Communism existed in such a large country and allowing other countries to kneel down to that horrible government made me feel sour all over. By preventing the spread of Communism, I knew that I could help prevent other countries from taking the wrong route and follow our wonderful west side’s government. Having written this telegram, I felt ever so refreshed releasing all the tormenting negative emotions and thoughts I had kept in.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your telegram, communism has got to stop. Imagine what would happen to France if it turned to communism? I will never forget the horror that Hitler brought to France after allying with the communist Russia. France was forced into separation and a disgraceful man named Petain was in charge of the new Vichy Regime in France. Where was I along with all the other brave heroes forced to? We were forced to flee to Britain. This all could have been avoided if Russia had not been communist. I shall never permit something like that to happen to France. My constitution of the fifth republic will guarantee that France becomes a strong republic.
ReplyDeleteWell, well, well, there is nothing malicious about communism. Communism is the most effective way of ruling a nation. You rulers see how strong a nation the Soviet Union is right now? It's all about me enforcing a strict and repressive in some sort rule to prevent instability and rebels. Communism cannot stop and will not. I shall do my best to prevent the stop of communism and continue to spread throughout Europe and enforce it even in China under Mao Zedong. You think the American policy of containment shall halt the communist progress? Ridiculous, that only strenghthens our determination and power by antagonizing us. Good luck non-communists and watch communism be spread throughout imminently.
ReplyDeleteGood luck,
Stalin
My fellow American, I fully concur with every detail that you have written about your telegram. For the sake of Europe's well-being, we must halt the increasing threat of communism. I have also taken action as well by proposing the Marshall Plan, which hopefully shall help democratic governments prosper throughout Europe. The United States is one of our Europe's few hopes for improving their current condition. Let us coalesce in order to stop this menacing threat.
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
George Marshall
